A new year brings new goals, a fresh mindset, and renewed motivation to take action on long-term dreams. For many aspiring aviators, that dream is a career at the airlines. If becoming a professional pilot has been on your radar, the best time to start working towards this career is now.

As we look ahead toward 2026 and beyond, the aviation industry is emphasizing the long-term demand for pilots across the globe.

Why Become a Pilot?

If you’ve always had an interest in becoming a pilot, you probably know the benefits of this exciting career. But if you’re exploring life as an airline pilot for the first time, this career offers a combination of opportunity, valuable experience, and lifestyle benefits:

  • Strong earning potential with clear career progression and growth
  • Global career opportunities across airlines, charter, cargo, or corporate aviation – wherever you want your skills to take you!
  • Structured career path based on experience and flight hours
  • Air travel industry consistently growing from a long-term perspective, increasing the need for pilots

Pilot training is direct, focused, with a clear end goal in mind. Rather than flying for fun or only getting a Private Pilot License because it’s on your bucket list, you’ll be training with purpose to fly professionally and set yourself up for success in your career.

Why the Best Time to Start is Now

Timing matters in professional aviation careers, so don’t delay your career further. The pilots being hired in the years to come are the students starting their flight training now. Starting flight school this New Year will allow you to take advantage of the industry’s projected growth once you complete training and time building.

  • Airline Hiring is Projected to Increase. Major airlines, regional carriers, and cargo operators are preparing for a significant wave of retirements. The below graph visualizes the retirement rates each year for most major airlines. Mandatory retirement age, combined with increasing travel growth, is creating a long-term demand for newly trained pilots.

  • Boeing’s Long-Term Forecast. Boeing’s industry outlook projects the need for hundreds of thousands of new pilots globally over the next 20 years to support fleet growth and gaps from retiring pilots. This isn’t just a short-term spike in demand. It’s a sustained, multi-decade demand cycle that the industry will continue to experience.

  • Seniority is Everything. In the airline industry, seniority affects everything from schedule and pay to the aircraft type you fly and quality of life. The earlier you start, the sooner you build pilot seniority, and that advantage continues to build and improve over your entire career.

A Career-Focused Flight School Makes All the Difference

Not all flight training is the same. A career-focused flight school, like AeroGuard, is designed to train students efficiently from day one on campus to day one at the airlines. With three flight school campuses in the United States, AeroGuard trains and prepares future commercial airline pilots for the world’s leading airlines.

As a leading choice for aspiring professional pilots, AeroGuard offers –

Make This the Year You Pursue Your Dream Career

Every January, thousands of people say, “This is the year I finally start”. The difference between those who reach their goals and those who don’t, is taking action.

If you’re inspired, motivated, and dedicated to becoming a commercial airline pilot – the industry outlook is strong, hiring windows are approaching, the demand is long-term, and the best time to begin is now.

Where do you want to be this time next year: Watching planes take off, or flying one?

AeroGuard is excited to announce that it now surpasses 120 aircraft in its fleet, with further acquisition plans already underway to further expand the fleet to 130 before the end of 2025. This strategic growth comes as the school prepares to launch training for the United States Air Force, further establishing AeroGuard as a leader in ab initio flight training for both commercial and military aviation.

AeroGuard is adding six Diamond DA42 multi engine aircraft to its fleet in the coming weeks ahead of the launch of a new training program for the United States Air Force. Air Force student pilots will train in single-engine Piper Archers and transition to the DA42 aircraft during their multi engine phase of training.

The fleet growth continues with AeroGuard’s plans to add 5 additional Piper Archers at the end of this month, a continuation of the school’s 90 aircraft order from Piper Aircraft. Altogether, the school’s aircraft acquisition plans will bring the fleet to 130 planes before the end of 2025.

These aircraft will strengthen AeroGuard’s existing programs and support this new program with the Air Force. AeroGuard’s purpose-built program for the Air Force will be tailored to align with their standards and designed to start the officers’ future military pilot career with flight training in a safe, efficient, and professional environment.

AeroGuard continues to drive growth with the start of this new program, not only growing its fleet, but also expanding its footprint at the school’s headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona at the Deer Valley Airport. With these additional aircraft, the school is also adding more simulators to provide further learning resources and support student body growth.

As it aims to reach 130 aircraft and beyond, AeroGuard is further establishing itself as a leader in career-focused, professional flight training and supporting future domestic and international commercial airline pilots as well as future professional military pilots.

As August approaches and the summer travel frenzy starts to subside with this back-to-school season, the air travel industry has seen a record high this summer with flights booked and passengers traveled.

If you thought the air travel industry was slowing down this year, think again! While 2023 produced several record-breaking travel days, 2024 has consistently broken the same records and exceeded passenger traffic expectations. Just when you thought the record-breaking travel numbers were done, the TSA continues to screen record-breaking amounts of passengers.

Even for a non-holiday travel time, June 23rd quietly broke the prior record for the most passengers screened in a single day with 2,996,193 people traveling. A record that stood for just two weeks!

Most recently, the July 4th weekend of increased passenger traffic beat every record previously set and eclipsed 3 million passengers for the first time ever. July 7th took the crown for the Busiest Day in U.S. Air Travel History with 3,013,413 passengers screened by TSA in a single day. This new record-breaking day has proven that the demand for air travel continues and the industry is continuing to thrive.

Looking ahead, August will conclude the busier air travel season of the summer, allowing airlines to prepare for increased travel predictions surrounding Labor Day weekend. Time will tell if 2024 will break additional travel records, but based off the current demand for travel, the chances seem likely!

To handle this additional passenger volume, several airlines are growing their fleet, including United Airlines, Delta Airlines, and American Airlines. Collectively, they’ve ordered hundreds of new planes that will be delivered over the next few years. With new planes comes the need for more pilots to fly those planes – but you may have also seen headlines of airlines halting their pilot hiring, so how can that be the case?

Following the post-pandemic recovery, the major airlines went on a pilot hiring frenzy to meet the quick growth in short term demand, backfilling the pilots that left during the pandemic. This quickly pulled pilots through the system, from Regional Airlines to Major Airlines.

This short-term factor was not expected to last and has now subsided, but overall pilot hiring remains significantly higher than pre-pandemic level, and many regional airlines are still hiring to meet their own needs. AeroGuard partner SkyWest Airlines is still hiring to fully staff their growing fleet and support the demand for air travel. SkyWest expects to increase their pilot workforce by 25%, increasing by about 1,000 pilots from last year.

Long term, airline travel is clearly not likely to decrease, and according to Boeing’s Pilot and Technician outlook, nearly 130,000 pilots will be needed in North America over the next 20 years to fly the planes they plan on selling.

If you’re looking for a long term career, our Pilot Pathway Program with SkyWest creates a direct path for student pilots to gain all 7 FAA certifications and ratings to become professional pilots. Upon program completion and building 1,500 flight hours required for employment at U.S. airlines, AeroGuard Cadets receive a Guaranteed First Officer Interview with SkyWest.

From start to finish, our students have a structured framework and direct path to their future careers as commercial airline pilots. If you’ve every thought about becoming a pilot, this is your sign that the opportunity of a lifetime is still ready for you. The air travel industry continues to buzz and break passenger traffic records, and it’s still a great time to become a pilot and pursue a rewarding and successful career!
